CONSIDER WHAT YOU KNOW AND WHY YOU KNOW IT
We aren’t always aware of exactly how and where we picked up the skills and knowledge we have now. Sometimes we may just assume we’ve always had them!
If your aim is to incorporate more gratitude into your life, then it’s important to put your past and present into perspective; instead of giving no thought to how you gained the tools and resources you have now, this exercise will encourage you to be aware of how it all happened.
Think about all the special skills, knowledge, and tools you have now. Include both work-related and personal skills, knowledge, and tools. You can make a list if that helps.
Pick a few of the most important ones, or the ones you use most often.
For each of these skills, write a sentence or two about how you gained it. For example, you might write: “I gained my self-confidence after that awful breakup when I was twenty-two. It was a terrible period of my life that taught me what I’m capable of.”
Once you’ve identified a source for each of your skills, read through what you’ve written and express your gratitude for the path that led you to each one. Say it out loud to make it more impactful. For example, you could say, “I’m so grateful I went through such a nasty breakup early in my twenties. It helped me to gain the self-confidence I needed to avoid some major mistakes later down the road.”
